Think wallpaper has had its day? Think again! Gone are the questionable designs of decades past, replaced by bright and funky statement pieces that will really add a ‘wow’ factor to your home.

Interested to see how you can give your home a modern facelift with wallpaper? We’re teaming up with our partners at Wall Candy Wallpaper to give you a few handy tips on how to work the wallpaper trend in your home!

1. Plan your space

Before you go out buying wallpaper and supplies, take a moment to sit down and plan your space. For example, if you’re thinking of adding wallpaper to your kids’ rooms, you might want to choose a more durable option. Or, if you’re planning on wallpapering a living area, you’ll want to think about designs that work well with your existing colour scheme and furniture.

2. Uses of wallpaper

One of the best things about wallpaper is its versatility. There are several ways you can add a real focal point to any room with wallpaper, without having to paper a whole wall. These include:

  • Using wallpaper as a style statement in the inside of cupboards, or open shelving.
  • Framing different types of wallpaper to form a gallery wall in living areas.
  • Rejuvenating the surfaces of old furniture – either stick on directly, or use a sheet of plain glass to keep the wallpaper in place.
  • Papering the ceiling to add a real ‘wow’ factor – though this might make the room feel a little cluttered, so be careful how you go about executing this!

3. Designs we love

Once you’ve planned your space, it’s time to choose your wallpaper design! This is the fun part. Here are just a few designs we can’t get enough of that might work perfectly in your home!

4. What will you need to DIY?

All Wall Candy wallpaper is DIY friendly, meaning you should easily be able to install it yourself (though maybe not without a few choice swear words when you’re first getting the hang of it). If you’re not into the whole DIY thing, Wall Candy can supply you with a list of recommended installers to do the job for you.

If you are planning on putting up your new wallpaper yourself, here are a few things you’ll want to have handy:

  • Stanley knife and scissors (make sure they’re nice and sharp)
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Bucket and whisk
  • Smoother
  • Wallpaper (obviously! Make sure you accurately measure the space you’re looking to cover, and always order more wallpaper than you need, in case of mistakes along the way)

Make sure you start by thoroughly cleaning and priming all the walls you plan on covering – don’t be lazy and skip this step, as it’s important you lay a good foundation for the wallpaper to stick to.
