Having a home with a balcony can provide an ideal place to retreat and relax in the beautiful Australian summer. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out how to furnish this area and make the most of your space.

Read on to see some great idea’s on what you can do with your balcony.

If your balcony is small, opt for limited furniture or choose a small outdoor couch, rather than table and chairs. If you decide on having no furniture on your balcony, incorporate some beautiful plants or outdoor standing lights to give it natural ambience and appeal. If you do want some furniture but are unsure as to what you can fit, why not opt for a hanging chair, such as the ones pictured below. This type of outdoor furniture provides an area to relax, without making the balcony appear crowded.

Another suggestion for a wide but narrow balcony, is to incorporate a couch and some fairy lights, to make the space look quaint and cosy. If you still feel this is bare and require something more, add a few planter boxes, similar to the images below, to incorporate nature and colour into your balcony. If you love the outdoors and animals, why not add a bird bath to attract some native wild life to your home. You can opt for a standing bird bath or even one that hangs, to allow space for other components.

If you don’t know what to choose and would like to incorporate a few of the above mentioned elements, then go ahead! If you are running out of space to put your beautiful plants, opt for a rustic style shelf, or a design that is consistent with the other features of your balcony.

As suggested above, adding fairy lights can make your balcony space feel relaxed and comfortable. It is important to consider whether your balcony is open to weather hazards such as the harsh Australian sun or rain and snow, dependent on where you live and whether your outdoor furniture will withstand these elements. It is also smart to choose plants that can tolerate the temperature throughout the year and can cope with a small dose of neglect, in case your life gets busier at times.

If you have enough space on your balcony, another great idea is to have a barbecue and beer fridge in the area, for convenient access and as a great way to entertain with friends and family.

I hope this list of ideas to add to your balcony has inspired you to create a space where you can relax in style with your loved ones.
