If you’ve been looking into building your own home then you might have come across the phrase ‘turnkey’. The term ‘turnkey’ refers to homes that are fully finished and ready to move into once the keys are handed over to you.
It’s important to be mindful that not every builder offers turnkey (or fully finished) homes as part of their standard specification. It’s definitely worth asking about with any builder you’re considering, as not being ‘turnkey’ can mean quite a bit of work left for you to do once you get the keys! What many buyers don’t realise when they work with a home builder for the first time is that most home design packages don’t come with things like carpet and curtains as standard. Turnkey homes on the other hand come equipped with everything you’ll need to move in – things like doorknobs, light switches and blinds. That’s why for most buyers, turnkey homes are the way to go. Here are a few of the benefits of opting for a move-in ready home over a basic build package.
Building a new home, especially for the first time, can be overwhelming if you don’t have a builder that knows what they’re doing. It’s different from buying an established home, in that you get much more of a say in the design, style and finishes of your home- which is super exciting! It can also mean a lot of choice, and perhaps more decisions to be made (and agreed on) than you had anticipated. A turnkey home takes the stress out of building, in that you can complete all your selections at the same time in your Pre Start meeting, ensuring consistency of style, and you make all the decisions in one meeting. Many people find it much less stressful doing it this way, so when they get their keys everything is installed as part of the build, rather than having to source quotes, measure windows for curtains or carpets, when they thought all the hard work of decision making was done! Turnkey home packages can reduce a lot of that hassle. Instead of trying to coordinate everything from lighting to window coverings, you can leave it to your builder and focus on the fun part of building a home – picking out your decor and home furnishings!
Turnkey homes can also be a great time saver as they eliminate many of the uncertainties of building a new home. Instead of waiting on your builder to hand over the keys so that you can plan for other contractors to attend to add the finishing touches to your home, you’ll be able to leave it with your builder to manage. By factoring everything needed to make your home move-in ready into their timeline, your builders will be able to give you a much better idea of when your home will actually be completed – so you can start planning for move-in day!
One of the main reasons to opt for a move-in ready home when building is that it can help you to get a much better picture of the cost of building your home from the beginning. Painting, floor coverings and window treatments can all add up, so when these items are included in your building contract, you can ensure your mortgage takes care of the lot. This is a great way to avoid any nasty surprises when it comes to costs so that you can stay within your budget more easily.
